We invest children's books with tremendous power to influence, and many adults seriously believe that giving children books about idealised families such as Janet and John's will make their children grow up to be just like them. However, for a child who is learning how to read, it is exciting. And culture continually evolves. Anyone remember diagramming sentences? And they all need the resources to achieve those goals. But I was also young enough that I could listen to French recordings and pick up the language that way, too. Excellent point, JM and I agree. I am not a fan of Common Core after reading it.
